St Gregory's Gala Dinner Input by Geraldine Doogue AO
In November of 2017, St Gregory's parish took it's first steps to re-imagining parish communities in the wake of the Royal Commission. The well-known broadcaster Geraldine Doogue said she knew of a phrase from United Kingdom Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks. “His emphasis was the invitation to belong before believing, I find that incredibly inviting and helpful,” she told 200 parishioners at Queanbeyan Parish’s Gala Dinner.
The ‘theme of the evening, was Living the Gospel Today – Next steps to re-imagining our parish communities’.
“As the London Tablet editorialised recently, there is a fundamental continuity between Jewish hope and Christian hope,” the well-known broadcaster said. In her address, Mrs Doogue also highlighted the need for parishioners and parishes to be prepared for change, to be bold and to try new things.
She also encouraged lay people to “step up”. “The only way forward for a thriving Catholic Church in Australia as I see it, is an institution with much more collaboration, power and influence sharing and mutual respect between clergy and laity,” she said.
Parish Council Chairperson, Mary Dorrian, said Mrs Doogue brought energy in her talk and with her presence. “I thought it was wonderful to have Geraldine here to stimulate the conversation,” she said.
