SACRAMENTS - Baptism

Summary

In our parish of St Gregory’s Baptisms are held on the  3rd and 4th Sundays of each month at St Raphael’s Church in Queanbeyan at 10.30am. When necessary, four baptisms may be celebrated together.

For Baptisms at Bungendore please call the Bungendore office on 62 381247. The office at Bungendore is open only on Wednesdays.

If this is your first child to be Baptised, or if you haven’t done so with your previous children, you will need to attend a Baptism Preparation Session.

These are held on the 1st Thursday of each month. The session starts at 7:30pm and lasts about an hour. It is held in the Parish Centre, 47 Lowe Street, Queanbeyan. At this session you will be given a 'Request for Baptism’ form to complete. You will also be given an envelope for the suggested baptismal offering of $75. There are a number of ways you can make this payment.   1.  Via the parish on line payment option at the link below

or 2.    place the envelope in the wooden box at the baptismal font on the day of the baptism.    The "Request for Baptism" form can be downloaded below.

You will also be asked to attend a Presentation Mass .This is where you and your child and hopefully the Godparents, will be welcomed to our parish community. If possible, the godparents are invited to attend this Mass to be part of this service. Parents are asked to present their child to the parish community at a weekend mass at either the 5.30pm (Saturday) or 9am (Sunday). Parents are asked to sit at the front of the church, on the far right hand side. There are reserved seats for parents presenting their children.

GODPARENTS:  Up to 4 Godparents can be chosen.  By Church law, the child must have at least 1 Godparent, who is a person who is baptised Catholic and has received Communion and Confirmation and who practices their faith on a regular basis.  Other godparents are CHRISTIAN WITNESSES and pledge their support to the child's spiritual growth. A CHRISTIAN WITNESS MUST BE BAPTISED IN ANOTHER FAITH.  The other criteria is that the Godparents have to be over 16 years of age. If neither parent is Catholic, they need to speak with the Priest before booking a Baptism.

Baptismal candle: You will be supplied with a candle, however parents may provide their own if they wish.

Baptismal Stole:  You will be supplied with a baptismal  stole at the ceremony.

OLDER CHILD BAPTISM: If your child is over the age of 6, you will need to speak to the Parish Priest for advice.

  1. NON RESIDENTS OF QUEANBEYAN/ NORTHERN MISSION AREA: If you reside in a suburb outside our parish, and would like your child to be Baptised in St Gregory’s Parish, you will need to obtain written permission from your Parish Priest. If this is your first child, you will also need to attend  a Baptism Preparation Session either in your own parish or at St Gregory’s parish and you will be expected to attend a Welcoming Mass at one of our Parish weekend Masses. A Request for Baptism form will also need to be completed for our parish register.

For more information please contact the Parish Office 62994611 between 9am - 3.30 pm, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  (CLOSED MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY).
